ARTIST LOVEARTPIX TO BE AN AMBASSADOR OF ANNA KENNEDY ON LINE.

https://loveartpix.co.uk

Steven Smith joins Dr. Anna Kennedy OBE in Manchester to invite one of its leading artists, Dez, to become an ambassador of Anna Kennedy Online.
https://annakennedyonline.com

In addition, this amazing artist has agreed to exhibit one of his incredible pieces at Autism & Art on May 22nd in London at the Fire Pit Gallery, generously donating the proceeds of the sale to the charity. Steven chats with the man everyone is talking about.
https://www.firepit.art

Dez, known professionally as Loveartpix, is a self-taught Audhd artist and advocate from Manchester, England.

Diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder in his twenties and receiving late diagnoses of Autism and ADHD in his forties, Dez has navigated a complex mental health journey, also undergoing therapy for Complex PTSD. Art became a lifeline during this time, helping him process heightened emotional states and giving voice to his experiences.

Since fully immersing himself in art around 2018, Dez has used his creative work as both personal therapy and a platform for advocacy. Through his distinctive pieces — often centered around Manchester life and neurodiversity — he promotes the therapeutic power of art as a daily coping strategy. Sharing his creations widely under the name Loveartpix, Dez aims to raise awareness about neurodivergence in a largely neurotypical society.

His work is featured across the Northwest of England, including Manchester, Blackpool, and Cumbria, as well as internationally at the Normandy Memorial Trust in France. A passionate supporter of community initiatives, Dez regularly donates art to charities, raising thousands of pounds at auction.

In 2023, he won his first Autism Hero Award, recognizing his contributions to neurodiversity advocacy. He also launched the UK’s first Neurodivergent Art Focus Group, piloted at HMP Manchester with outstanding success.

For the past 3 years, Dez has been filmed for a documentary chronicling his late-diagnosis journey and the role of art therapy in his life. In March 2025, Loveartpix launched his debut Art exhibition where he also shared his platform collaborating with other neurodivergent artists. ‘A Neurodivergent Art Exhibition’ by Loveartpix showcased in Spinningfields, Manchester.

At 45, Dez sees himself as only just beginning to truly understand his conditions. He considers creativity not just a passion, but a vital tool for self-regulation and connection — and he remains dedicated to sharing his journey to inspire and support others.

Anna Kennedy says “We are thrilled to have Dez as an ambassador. I have followed him over the past few years and watched his passion and confidence grow through his creativity and digital artwork, especially after winning the Autism Hero Awards in 2023. As a self-taught autistic artist creating wonderful digital pieces, he will be a great role model for our charity. Dez can also share how his artwork has helped him through personal struggles, inspiring other autistic individuals to do the same.”

1. Hello, what does it mean to you to become a patron of Anna Kennedy Online?

Hi Steven,

Becoming a patron for Anna Kennedy Online (AKO) is such a privilege and an honour — not to sound too cliché! I have been involved with AKO for a few years through art donations, small projects, and also by winning the Autism Hero Award for Creative Arts and Media with them in 2023.

Since my late autism diagnosis in 2021 (at the age of 41), I have thrown myself into understanding my condition the best I can — not only to help myself, but to help others too, as I know there are so many people out there like me. Having been nominated for six awards in such a short time through my contributions in art donations and raising awareness, winning the AKO award was a major highlight for me.

Fast forward two years, and now being asked by Anna to be an ambassador just fills me with pride.

https://loveartpix.co.uk/about/

What made you start creating art?

I have always had a creative flare but really started to focus on it when I was going through my autism assessment. It was a very difficult and disruptive point in my life processing such an epochal event. Stuggling a lot at night, using the Picsart app on my phone really fitted in, being the least disorderly. Any art piece I create, I really submerge myself into the topic and it gives my erratic thoughts focus. Realising that the art I was creating resonated with many people I decided that I wanted to use it as a tool to promote understanding and awareness as much as possible.

What artists inspire you?

To be perfectly honest, I don’t really get inspiration from artists — probably more from people. I am a naturally creative person, so when I look at life, I feel inspired by topics that intrigue and affect me, or by things I am passionate about. I am then drawn to create around those themes.

Being a self-taught artist, and because I use art as a tool for self-help, I haven’t formally studied art; I simply use it to process my emotions. It’s something I turn to when I’m struggling or when I need to focus my thoughts. I don’t feel like a traditional artist in the usual sense.

That said, I do follow many artists and art profiles on social media, and there are so many amazing artists out there. One artist I really like is @deanevansart on Instagram. His work is so vibrant and thought-provoking. If you get the chance, definitely check out his profile!

If you had to take someone out in Manchester, what one place would you take them to?

If I had to take someone to Manchester, it would have to be the Nag’s Head pub. The Nag’s Head is a true Manchester landmark, and I’m proud to say that, among the 4,000 images of the beautiful city I call home, I have two of my pieces in their collection.

One is a tribute to highly decorated war hero Harry Billinge MBE LdH — the largest piece in the building. (I had the honour of meeting Harry before he passed away and still stay in touch with his family.) The other is one of my ‘Bees About Town’ collection, displayed in the front window.

What does love mean to you and how important is it in your life?

Love is many things and shows itself in many forms. Helping and supporting people to make things better is love — depending on your personal feelings.

For me, putting myself in harm’s way to help others is a huge form of love. Missing out on events with my son due to my condition, but then being happy just spending time with him afterward — even though I felt upset about missing the event — is love.

Knowing that I would put my life in front of my family’s without hesitation, and valuing their lives far more than my own, is love. Self-sacrifice is love. Pain is love. Seeing others happy is love.

I actually find this a difficult question to answer, as there are so many variables to what love means.

https://loveartpix.co.uk/about/

They say “Big boys don’t cry” — do you think this is true?

I think this is such a harmful quote from a bygone era that still has a massive negative impact on society today — especially on the male suicide rate.

Crying is a way to process emotions. It’s part of being human. We all do it, and I find it such a bizarre notion that somehow suppressing it makes you tougher or better at dealing with life.

Being able to express yourself and be open about your emotions is, in my opinion, a very strong thing and speaks volumes about a person’s character. Yes, there are times when you have to deal with situations that require mental and physical strength, and you have to push through and fight — but I am really against this phrase.

No, I definitely do not think this quote is true.

How important is it to you to inspire and help others who want to create?

Art for me is the tool to understanding and processing things I struggle with. I know the positive impact it has first hand from my own experience. Obviously art comes in many forms too. Last year I piloted the first of its kind neurodivergent art focus group for prisoners in HMP Manchester which was a huge success. Art was the tool I used to get the prisoners to explore how their condition affects them in the hope of supporting rehabilitation. Some of the prisoners used words and created poems, some preferred to paint, and others liked to draw. I then collated what was created by each individual and edited the final pieces on the Picsart app to create a unique collection – which I will be displaying at a later date. It’s well documented the power of creativity and art therapy so for me I try to promote this at every chance I get.

What would you like to achieve next?

On a personal level, I would like to achieve a sense of mental contentment and balance. For me, this would mean understanding my condition much more deeply. Although beginning to understand it has already helped me so much, I still struggle and fight daily. I want to continue striving to be a good parent and family member.

In my career, I have a lot of projects in the works, so I will continue to develop these and, hopefully, help many more people and bring about positive change. I guess my main goals are to be a good role model, help others, and continue turning what I go through into something positive — oh, and now, to be a good ambassador for AKO!

Best buy for Summer FM London .

Steven’s Hot Tip https://fmlondon.co.uk/collections/underwear

https://fmlondon.co.uk/pages/about-us

No matter how good David Beckham looks in his BOSS underpants, there is absolutely no way I am paying £45 or more for a pack of three. Even if he personally delivered them to my door, it would still be a firm no from me.

It’s not that I’m being tight with money — far from it. I live a very busy and active life, constantly working out, dashing from place to place, and keeping on top of everything. For me, my underpants need to be practical above all else. They must offer strength, durability, and a feel-good factor against my skin. In short, they have to work hard and feel great at the same time.

From my personal experience, even some of the big-name designer brands don’t always deliver. In fact, some of them don’t last much longer than cheaper alternatives, and when you’re paying prices that rival the cost of a good pair of jeans, it’s hard not to feel resentful. I still want to look and feel good in my underwear, of course, especially with summer fast approaching. Warmer weather means I’ll be out and about a lot more, and let’s be honest — I’ll probably need to change my underpants at least twice a day.

https://fmlondon.co.uk/collections/underwear

Now, here’s the great news. Listen up, boys, girls, and everyone in between who loves staying up to date with the latest must-have fashion in men’s underwear. I have found the very best option out there — and it won’t break the bank!

Not only does it look fantastic on, but it feels absolutely incredible. Your body can breathe, the fit is spot-on, and you won’t believe the comfort. The brand you need to know about is FM London. Trust me, this is going to be the most talked-about brand very soon.

FM London started back in 2015 with three brothers who were completely fed up with paying ridiculous prices for basic clothing. They decided to do something about it and created a no-fuss brand that delivers real quality without the hefty price tag.

When it comes to men’s socks and underpants, these guys are truly onto a winner. Their underwear offers everything you could possibly want:

  • A stretchy, ergonomic fit
  • A cotton-rich blend that feels soft and breathable
  • Anti-chafing design for all-day comfort
  • Odour-fighting technology to keep you feeling fresh

This is my top recommendation for the summer — affordable, comfortable, and practical. Plus, they still look great enough to wear on a date night (whatever that is these days!) and bring a little bit of sexy back into your wardrobe.

So if you want to feel good, look good, and not spend a fortune, check them out. Trust me, your underwear drawer will thank you.

2Shades Magazine Presents the Aesthetics Queen, Clare McSweeney

Clare’s monthly column will bring you expert advice, the latest beauty and aesthetics news, and, of course, a few fun insights into everyone’s favourite Essex girl—Clare herself!

I’m Clare McSweeney, and I’m absolutely thrilled to be launching my first column in 2Shades Magazine! Most of the time, I run a small, exclusive aesthetics business built entirely by word of mouth—CM Aesthetics, based in Brentwood, Essex. Many of my clients say I have healing hands, perhaps because I spent ten years working as an intensive care nurse. Nursing was my dream from a young age, but as a mother of three, I needed more flexibility.

I discovered the aesthetics industry through a friend and instantly felt it was a natural extension of my skill set. I like to look good, so I was fascinated by the world of aesthetics. Determined to make it work, I took out a loan and enrolled in a training course while continuing my nursing career. Honestly, I’ve never looked back. Helping people feel their best is my passion, and when I’m not doing that, you’ll probably find me enjoying a bit of ballroom dancing—it’s my guilty pleasure!

Clare chats to client Pam Sharrock

Now, let’s get started! So many people ask me how to get holiday ready. While aesthetic treatments and beauty procedures can enhance your look, poor planning can actually ruin your holiday. Here’s what you need to know before you jet off.

Clare’s Top Holiday Prep Tips

1. Schedule your treatments in advance
Aesthetic treatments take time to settle, and last-minute work can leave you feeling less than fabulous.

  • Botox: If you’re considering Botox (and yes, boys, this one’s for you too!), schedule it at least a month before your holiday. If needed, get a top-up two weeks before departure. Nobody wants sweaty underarms ruining their crisp linen shirts on a night out so boys get Botox for under the arms .
  • Make it last: Want your Botox results to last longer? Use a high-factor sunscreen and keep your face out of the sun as much as possible. A little fake tan can work wonders without aging your skin.
  • Lip filler & dermal filler: Never, ever get fillers right before a holiday! Ideally, have these done at least a month before to allow any swelling or bruising to settle. You’d be shocked by the number of people I’ve had to correct just before they fly out. Aesthetics is not like a trip to the hairdresser—even with hair, I always recommend going a few weeks before your holiday to let the colour settle.

2. Clare’s Holiday Must-Haves
These beauty essentials will help keep your skin looking fresh and flawless while you’re away.

  • A silk pillowcase & travel silk pillow: Most skin damage happens at night, so a silk pillowcase (like Fresh Face Pillow) is an absolute must. If you’re staying in a hotel, pop a silk slip over the pillow provided—it makes a hugedifference! A small travel silk pillow is also a game-changer, reducing static and being much gentler on your face while you sleep.
The Fresh Face Pillow – The Ultimate Beauty Sleep Essential SS15 will give you 15% off

  • Elizabeth Arden 8-Hour Cream: This cult beauty product is a celebrity favourite for a reason. It has multiple uses—you can apply it as a lip gloss, moisturizer, or even a tiny bit in your hair to tame frizz. Absolute holiday essential!
  • Avon Skin So Soft: Swap your usual shower gel and body spray for this miracle product. It’s budget-friendly, smells amazing, leaves your skin feeling silky smooth, and best of all—it repels mosquitoes! Even the US Army reportedly swears by it. Pro tip: Start taking Vitamin B12 and garlic supplements two weeks before your trip—mosquitoes hate it!
  • DO NOT GET BURNT! A good high-protection sunscreen is essential. Gradually building your tan is far better than frying on day one. Slow and steady wins the race for a glowing, healthy holiday tan.

I hope these tips help you feel and look your best for your next getaway. I can’t wait to answer your questions in future columns, and don’t forget to tune in to me on Gateway Radio!

Steven’s Viewz: Four Must-Have New Beauty Products

Having been a creator in the beauty industry before becoming a writer, my eagle eye is always on the latest hot products to keep us looking our very best.

As spring approaches, I thought it was the perfect time to share my top four picks that will bring out the best in you.

1. Enough Wellness Collagen – Created by Women for Women (But Men Can Use It Too!)

“Beauty comes from within.”

Enough Wellness Collagen is a highly effective supplement that combines 10,000mg of two types of high-quality bovine collagen with vitamins C and D to enhance absorption and maximize benefits. This targeted formula nourishes from within, making it an excellent addition to any beauty routine.

Why Collagen Matters

Collagen is a vital structural protein essential for maintaining the health and integrity of our skin, hair, nails, joints, and connective tissues. As we age, collagen production declines, leading to visible signs of aging such as sagging skin, weakened joints, and brittle hair and nails.

Adding a collagen supplement to your daily routine helps replenish these levels, promoting a youthful glow and overall well-being.

Premium-Quality Ingredients

Enough Wellness sources its hydrolyzed Swiss Bovine Collagen Peptides from grass-fed cows in Switzerland, ensuring purity and sustainability.

The formula is free from gluten, GMOs, artificial colors, flavors, fats, sugars, and carbs, providing essential support for:
✔ Radiant skin
✔ Strong hair and nails
✔ Flexible joints
✔ A healthy metabolism

Its neutral taste makes it incredibly versatile—you can add it to smoothies, water, juice, or even use it in baking. We loved it at 2SHADES!

2 Re[Sens] – A Game Changer for Redness-Prone Skin

It’s not often that I get truly excited about a new skincare range—after all, I’ve seen just about every potion and lotion on the market. But when leading skincare expert Iryna Stewart suggested that my Celtic skin redness could be tamed and calmed, I was all ears.

And she was right. Re[Sens] is a game-changer for those of us prone to redness or flushed-looking skin.

The Philosophy Behind Re[Sens]

Made in Ukraine, this brand is deeply rooted in ancient Ukrainian traditions, bringing them into the modern world through the symbolism of the circle—a concept inspired by Trypillian culture. This symbol represents the eternal cycle of time, regeneration, harmony, and the connection between nature and cosmic rhythms.

But Re[Sens] is more than just skincare. It’s about rethinking beauty—where high-quality, effective products are created with sustainability in mind.

Breaking Down the Name: Re[Sens]

🔹 RE – Represents a moment of rethinking skincare, where both the product and its packaging are designed without harming the planet. The brand emphasizes that the earth needs care just as much as our skin, and failing to consider this leads to a loss for everyone.

🔹 SENS – Derived from “senses” and “sensitivity”, reflecting both the needs of delicate skin and the emotional sensitivity of an individual. Re[Sens] acknowledges that every element of life affects our well-being, offering a 360° approach to skincare.

A New Standard in Beauty: Slow, Thoughtful, and Effective

Re[Sens] embraces the philosophy of Slow Beauty, which is built on the idea that more is not always better. Just as multitasking can lead to burnout, overwhelming the skin with too many ingredients can cause stress and irritation. Instead, Re[Sens] focuses on:

✔ Mindful consumption
✔ Achieving results without compromising skin health
✔ Ethical and sustainable skincare

Rather than overloading the skin, Re[Sens] provides a balanced blend of anti-inflammatory, moisturizing, and soothing ingredients, ensuring effective care without overstimulation.

For those looking to adopt a conscious, holistic approach to skincare—one that nurtures both the skin and the planetRe[Sens] is a must-try.

Best Dental Care

My next recommendation; The Best Dentist Practice and Dentist; ‘Knightsbridge Dental Care: Doctor Alan Gold’.

http://knightsbridgedental.co.uk/clinicians/dr-alan-gold/

There is nothing more terrifying for me personally than a visit to the dentist. For me, as is the case for many, the child-hood trauma from seeing the school dentist has lingered and has evolved into a type of phobia, now, in later life. Many people in the U.K. literally have to have their teeth practically falling out or need to be in excruciating pain before they dare to step over the threshold of the dreaded Dentist surgery.

My trauma undoubtedly derived from the school dentist and I can still visualise the gas mask coming towards me. In the ’60s, little empathy was shown towards a crying child.

But also, even in my adult life, my anxiety was heightened when being told by one desist “Stop moaning you’re a big guy this should be a doddle”. I felt like I was being tortured by some horrendous instrument like in a scene from the movie Saw. Furthermore, I have even been punched in the face accidentally, to add further insult to injury, when the dentist attempted to pull out a support as he rushed to complete my filling.

Have you ever noticed when the dentist accidentally stabs you with their scissors or one of their many sharp implements you often get the response “Oh your sensitive in that area?” Being honest, I find myself wanting to get up and grab the tool out of their hands to stick it in their bottom as he/she squeals, simply replying “Gosh you’re sensitive there!”

Having lived in the U.S. for nine years, I went to the same dentist and wonderful hygienist for the whole time, without any issues. Yes, it is true that the U.K. is now catching up with its dentistry counterparts, but we do lag behind in terms of the advancement of the technology and skills within dentistry in the U.S. It took me almost a decade to find a hygienist that matched the practice I used to attend in Los Angeles. ‘Nanny toothbrushes’ does not begin to describe some of the terrible experiences I have had in London. Naturally, the last dental disaster left me fervently searching for a new dentist, a bit like when you find a good hairdresser and do not want to lose them at any cost. The minute I hear “Do you drink coffee or tea?” from the mouth of the hygienist, I want out of there!

My poor departed friend, the brilliant journalist Lester Middlehurst, contracted Hepatitis B, apparently from a dentist in Brighton. It was ten years since he had been near a dentist at the time and he called me asking for a recommendation as he had read about ‘painless dentistry’ in a magazine. This process of being put to sleep for dental procedures had fast become popular in the U.S. and he admitted that the only way he was going to sit on a dentist chair, as if he could be put to sleep, even if it was just a cleaning his teeth required. The usually vivacious Mr. Middehurst did not even want to talk to a dentist receptionist as it gave him the shivers, but his teeth were beginning to rot and with his heavy smoking, his smile was starting to deteriorate.

Being in the world of beauty and fashion, it is easy to get recommendations for good dentists, but very few offered painless dentistry. In fact, a few seemed perplexed when I asked about this type of procedure.

Then…BINGO! I discovered Knightsbridge Dental Practice located in Beauchamp Place, one of the infamously chic streets in London. They do not advertise or have a social media presence, which inferred that they must have a very good reputation if word of mouth was what their business relied upon.

http://knightsbridgedental.co.uk/services/

Even after finding them, it took another month to get poor Lester there and I had to tell a little lie that they put you out before they even looked at your teeth. I needn’t have worried as an imminent love affair between Roman Franks (one of the partners of the practice) and Lester started as he was put into a dream-like state, to repair the damage caused by many years of neglect.

Painless dentistry involves sedation to relieve any anxiety but it does not put you fully to sleep. It is undeniably a great benefit for those patients who suffer from anxiety in the dentist chair, though this can cost extra and regrettably, not all practices offer this service.

Up until this point, I had been waiting to make my bi-annual visits to the U.S. to go to the dentist. I was so impressed not only by the expert customer service but the wonderfully trained receptionist, at this clinic in particular, that I decided to try out the practice for myself. Senior partner, Alan Gold, fortunately, had an appointment which is rare and I have to admit, we clicked right away, particularly with him being a Geordie. He had a wicked sense of humour and appeared to genuinely listen to my own personal issues around anxiety and dentist visits.

The amazing Alan Gold

Additionally, he was not selling me anything, whereas so many times, I have had consultations where I feel that they are simply trying to sell to me.  I did need some work, however, and so he suggested attempting to do the procedure without sedation initially and seeing how I coped. Bless him, I am really not easy and having had bad experiences in the past, the slightest noise can set me off.

Alan’s clinic is beautiful and relaxing and there is a television above you to focus on, which takes your mind off what he is actually doing. It soon became clear, however, even with his immense skills, I would need to be sedated for most invasive procedures.

Now for those thinking of asking for sedation, you need to do this when you have time, as essentially you will need to go straight home and rest following the procedure and ideally you will need a friend to take you home as you may feel uninhibited and therefore need supervision.

Alan himself is a breath of fresh air, he jogs to work each day and has never had a single day off work sick, since launching the practice in 1975. He is an expert in cosmetic dentistry also, giving a running commentary on daily news issues whilst skilfully working on your teeth.

In 1970 Alan graduated from Newcastle University,  training extensively in the very latest in dentistry. He took the SAAD (Society for the Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry) course and has treated many thousands of phobic dental patients using intravenous and inhalation sedation techniques.

After Roman retired, Alan’s new partner, the very glamourous Avee-Marie joined the practice, an approachable, warm and gentle clinician. She qualified from the Kings College School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2000 and has been practising for nearly 17 years. She brings an advanced holistic feel to the already welcoming and professional team. Avee-Marie specialises in phobic patients.

Avee -Marie

Much as Alan is old school and has no interest in social media, Avee-Marie has managed to get the practice to ‘dip its toes’ into social media marketing.

Alan Gold and out own Steven Smith

You cannot find a better place to go to if you have issues and anxiety around going to the dentist. It is safe to say, Alan wraps you in cotton wool.

Though he teases me when I attend the clinic “Oh god it’s you! I need sedation!” I cannot rate both the clinic and the dentistry team highly enough.

Does a Healing Touch Lead to Better Aesthetics?

    Intensive care nurse Claire Sweeney.

Steven Smith meets intensive care nurse Claire Sweeney, who is bringing her unique touch to the aesthetics world.

My dear friend Nicki Rodriguez arrived for lunch looking stunning—and noticeably younger than when we last met a few months ago. Nicki, a former WAG and fellow PR professional, has since transitioned into a wildlife presenter at “Living Things.” She knows all the best beauty spots, especially in her stomping ground of Essex. I was determined to find out what was giving her that extra sparkle.

Nicki Rodriguez someone who not only looks beautiful . She knows the best in the business,

“I had a little freshen-up,” Nicki laughed, adding that it was honestly the best treatment she had ever received. Digging deeper, she revealed that everyone in Essex is talking about a woman who is not only brilliant at aesthetics but whose touch makes the process remarkably comfortable. “She just has this healing touch. You really feel she cares. It was the first time someone measured my face and pointed out what would make a difference and what didn’t need attention.”

The woman in question is Claire Sweeney, who runs a small aesthetics business in Brentwood, Essex—CM Aesthetics.

Claire has worked as an intensive care nurse for ten years. Nursing was her dream from a young age. A mother of three, Claire discovered the aesthetics field through a friend and felt it was a natural addition to her skill set. “I like to look good,” Claire said, “so I was fascinated by aesthetics.” Taking out a loan, she enrolled in a training course while continuing her nursing career.

“I realised what was lacking in a lot of aesthetic work I had seen. Many practitioners weren’t looking at the whole face. I don’t just want to administer Botox—my technique is like sculpting or using fillers in  addition in the  right places can bring out the best results. Treating by area alone can have disappointing  effects.”

When Claire began practicing, clients commented on how much time she spent discussing realistic outcomes. “You can’t turn a squirrel into a cat,” she joked. “My goal is to bring out the best version of someone, not make them look completely different. People leave wondering what they’ve done, but they simply look fresher and younger.”

Fresh lips created by Claire Sweeney ,

Clients frequently mention Claire’s healing touch. “Maybe it’s something I naturally have, or perhaps it’s the empathy I developed through nursing. I’m considering studying Reiki in the new year to enhance my craft. I wouldn’t claim that having healing hands guarantees better aesthetics, but many clients say their experience with me is less painful.”

Aesthetics has given 45 year old Claire the freedom to manage her schedule, allowing her to spend more time with her children. “Making people feel good and look their best gives me immense satisfaction,” she concluded.

    “BOLD “

Steven Smith Attends the book launch of Pink Ribbon Foundation ” BOLD . At The House of Keune by Bloom. in London

    https://www.pinkribbonfoundation.org.uk/shop/88/bold-photo-book

Glitz and glamour gathered in London on Thursday night for the launch of the coffee table photo book, BOLD

BOLD features pictures of women who have lost their hair—80 percent of them due to treatment for breast cancer.

The venue for the launch, The House of Keune by Bloom Salon, was impossible to miss; it stood out like a beacon of light. A hair salon might seem like an unusual choice to launch a book about being bald, but as an ex-hairdresser, I can say it was the perfect place.

Ten years ago, I was featured in My Left Boob, the story of my dear friend, actress and socialite Sally Farmiloe-Neville, who I shaved her head, styled wigs, and helped grow her hair back.

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/My-Left-Boob-Sally-Farmiloe-Neville/dp/1909716030

The BOLD photo book is a powerful project that captures the beauty and resilience of women who have experienced hair loss due to breast cancer treatment, alopecia, or other conditions. The collaboration between the Pink Ribbon Foundation and Caroline Sikkenk Photography highlights the strength and femininity of these women through stunning portraits, offering a new perspective on beauty beyond hair.

Many of the women featured in the book were present at the launch, with their hair now grown back. The room was electric with love, laughter, and tears.

The photo book, with its high-quality presentation and 192 pages of artistic images, serves as a tribute to the courage of the women who participated. It’s also a meaningful way to support the Pink Ribbon Foundation, as all profits from the book’s sales go towards the charity’s efforts. Pre-orders are available now, offering a chance to own a piece of this empowering project while contributing to a vital cause.

The evening began with a chance to explore the BOLD exhibition, stylishly displayed around the salon’s shampoo area. It was an exciting atmosphere with celebrities such as Wendy Turner Webster (Pet Rescue), Dr. Anna Kennedy OBE, celebrity artist Piluca, and comedian Sarah Mulindwa joining the guests.

The real stars of the night were revealed as the guests sat down to listen to a panel headed by Lisa Allen and Dutch photographer Caroline Sikkenk. Models Lauren Plumb, Tricia Bailey, and Anais Muczynski, all from the iconic photo collection Bald and Beautiful, shared their stories of battling cancer with courage and great humor. The audience laughed, cried, and found inspiration in their stories. There was a standing ovation when Tricia shared her vocal talents and sang Sweet Caroline.

There wasn’t a dry eye in the house when a tribute was paid to one of the amazing models who is sadly no longer with us. Sally Franklin passed away after a recurrence of breast cancer, but her brave and supportive family was present to share their love and memories of this incredible woman.

    Sally Franklin

Lisa hopes to take the panel and show to Scotland next, and we at 2 Shades salute her, her team, and the incredible women of BOLD.

Anna Kennedy takes a time out and talks school

Dr. Anna Kennedy OBE gives her advice and answer readers questions in her 2Shades  column
    https://annakennedyonline.com

    Hello Anna!

Welcome back! What were your school days like?

I went to a Catholic school in the Northeast. Little did I know my husband Sean also was at the same school. Primary School were good and bad days for me and I enjoyed some lessons not all. Many of the nuns at the school were too strict and would not get away with caning across your knuckles or hand for talking too much!

If you happen to be late for school, you had to stand under the crucifix for 30 minutes at the end of the day and pray.

We were often also given many lines to write if no one owned up for example: A pupil threw a rubber at the Maths teacher whilst he was writing on the blackboard. I remember we had to write 100 times ‘Rubbers rub they do not fly!’

    Dear Anna.

Please, I am at the end of the line with my 14 year old son. He was expelled last year for being disruptive in class. Now the school have written to me and said he cannot come back. James was diagnosed with Autism and attention disorder at 13. What can I do? Is there a right to appeal or should I find a school that is more suited to his needs? James is super bright and was in line to take exams

    Many thanks
    Diana Waterford

    Dear Diana,

Thank you for your email. You do have the right to challenge your son’s exclusion, and the school should have informed you of this process when the exclusion occurred. The following government guidance may be helpful, if your son attended a maintained school or an Academy:

    https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/school-exclusion

If you believe your son was excluded due to a disability-related reason, you can separately make a claim of disability discrimination to the First-tier Tribunal before the school process concludes.

More information can be found here:

    https://www.gov.uk/complain-about-school/disability-discrimination

If the Tribunal rules in your favour, it can order actions that put your son in the position he would have been in if the discrimination hadn’t occurred, which could include reinstating him in the school.

Lastly, it’s important to ensure that all your son’s special educational needs are identified and met. If you haven’t done so already, you may want to apply for an Education, Health and Care (EHC) needs assessment.

This is the first step towards securing an EHC Plan (EHCP). The test for starting this assessment is whether your son may need a level of special educational provision that is only available through an EHCP. Given what you have said, this may possibly be the case.

    Dear Anna,

Hello love the column. My daughter lives with Autism, and she is a great singer and just so loveable. My ex-husband won’t hear about it and said I am indulging her and encouraging her to be different. I am looking for a school that caters to her needs even its a private school or theatre My parents are happy to. pay. My ex is trying to block it and threatening to take me back to court if I remove her from her present school that I do not feel caters to her needs. What can I do?

    All my best
    Stephany Wimbledon

    Dear Stephany,

Thank you for reaching out and for your kind words about the column. I spoke to my husband Sean who supports the charity, and this is his area of expertise. It does sounds like you’re in a difficult situation.

    My husband Sean shares:

    Sean Kennedy

If your daughter has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), section 51 of the Children and Families Act 2014 gives you the right to challenge any part of the EHCP, including the school placement, even though a Tribunal if necessary.

This right cannot be interfered with by other courts. While your ex-husband is entitled to express his views to the Tribunal, he cannot prevent you from exercising this right. However, your daughter’s opinions will also carry weight, particularly depending on her age and if she has capacity.

It is certainly an unfortunate situation. If your ex-husband is threatening to take this matter to the Family Courts and your daughter does not currently have an EHCP, I would strongly advise seeking legal advice from a family law specialist.

We both wish you all the best in navigating this,

    Best Wishes,
    Anna

    Dear Anna,

I am a big fan of yours and have been living all my life with various issues, it was my 16th birthday last week my mum held a party and I am not real social so I found it embarrassing and in the end  it was more about her. She even got drunk and went on and on about how proud she is of me- even with all my little ways. There was about five of my friends from school there with the rest of the mums. Anna I just want to leave home and get away from her. What should I tell her and is there any organisations that helps kids like me escape?

    Blair Luton

    Dear Blair,

Thank you for reaching out and Happy 16th Birthday. Have you spoken to your mum about how you feel? Is there a relative that you can confide in about how you are feeling?

Parenting an autistic teen can be challenging for parents, so it’s important to seek support from other parents, support groups, or professionals who specialise in autism.

Are there any local support groups near to where you live? Leaving home is a huge step and you need to be well prepared and safe as a vulnerable young person. I hope things improve for you very soon and your relationship with your mum also improves.

    Sending best wishes,
    Anna

Has the interview selection for Colleges and Universities changes to aid those diagnosed on the autism spectrum?

Colleges and universities are required to comply with the  Equality Act 2010. This means that if an individual with a statutory disability faces disadvantages during the interview process due to the effects of their disability, the institution must take reasonable steps to avoid these disadvantages.

For clarity, a statutory disability is defined in section 6, the Equality Act 2010. This section defines disability as a physical or mental impairment that has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on a person’s ability to perform normal day-to-day activities. To qualify, the impairment must significantly impact the individual’s ability to carry out activities that are considered normal for most people (including work and university study) and must have lasted, or be expected to last, at least 12 months.

It is important to note that conditions such as ADHD and ASD are not automatically classified as statutory disabilities, though they may be. The key consideration is how these conditions impact the individual. It follows that what are known as reasonable adjustments are specific to the individual. Importantly the university or college needs to be informed of any impairments before the section process.

While universities and colleges are not required to lower the competency levels expected of students, they must provide adjustments to the interview process where necessary.

There is a lot more to the Equality Act, but I trust this provides a useful overview and is, my husband has confirmed, is accurate.

    Thank you,
    Anna

I grow a beard ( Is it the latest trend ?)

    https://www.grahammartinphotography.co.uk

As the singer Kelis would say, “Her milkshake brings all the boys to the yard”. One thing that will always bring many howling to the yard is a man with facial hair or, at the very least, that five o’clock shadow. From Prince William to David Beckham the “Beard ‘is in

In the late 70’s, the clones with their check shirts and ’taches emulated what many gay men saw as the ultimate heterosexual man with Tom Selleck and Burt Reynolds the undisputed poster boys. And let’s not forget the fantasy images of Tom of Finland.

    Image: Tom of Finland foundation

In my experience, much as the clones looked “hot”, what was on the lid was often not what was in the can. Many were hiding their dislike of their own sexuality by playing it pseudo straight, something that was compounded when, in New York in the 80s, I was outside the Munster Bar and a friend advised me, “Babe: if you get into any trouble scream for the drag queens. They will come running. The clones will just go hollering back into the bar.”

Freddie Mercury brought the clone ’tache look back to life for Queen’s third studio album, “The Game” – a trend many said was inspired by the San Francisco gay clubs. The look was prevalent in London at Heaven, the Coleherne and the Earl’s Court Catacombs. Freddie is actually quoted as saying that when he looked back on all that black nail varnish, chiffon and satin, he thought, “God, what was I doing?”

    The much-missed Freddie Mercury.

I recall having lunch with the late, amazing Kenny Everett and the Daily Mail journalist Lester Middlehurst in early 90s Los Angeles, when I couldn’t help but notice that both men had moustaches. Kenny was delightful and so very sweet. Still, he commented that I should really grow a ’tache. Men without them simply looked like women to him.

My partner of 18 years had a sexy ’tache, and his hair was standing up on the crown where someone had cut it too short, when I first spotted him. Devilishly handsome, I loved his ’tache. Although I’ve always remained smooth faced, I guess I always went with the theory that opposites attract. It just did not feel right to me if I missed even one day with the razor.

Movember, the well-known charity, was behind my only attempt to grow a ’tache. One week in and friends kept asking if I had not washed. Two weeks on and it was starting to show, and though not impressive, it was there. A beautician friend of mine offered to get rid of a few nose hairs.

During the action she waxed half my newly sprouted moustache off. I let out a little shriek of horror. “WHERE’S MY MOUSTACHE GONE?”

“Is that what that was?” came the reply.

It seems that 2020 saw an explosion of male facial hair adorning our screens. My favourite actor, Colin Farrell, makes me go weak at the knees with his Irish accent and ’tache. Eurovision, though cancelled, gave us the Russian band “Little Big”. Joining them from the gypsy Russian band “The Hatters” was Yuriy Muzychenko.

    Yuriy – “Little Big”.

Yuriy, with his many stages of facial hair, is sex on legs, as well as being uber-talented. Since “Little Big” seem to embrace the ’tache so easily, it’s a pity their stance on LGBTQ issues seems a little questionable. Tom Hardy and Jake Gyllenhaal are wearing the beard this season and it looks (as Americans would say) totally  awesome on them.

    Colin Farrell. Phwoarrr.

Graham Martin, one of London’s premier LGBTQ photographers, has seen an explosion of his clients sporting facial hair. Graham, who himself wears a distinguished silver-fox goatee, tells me that half his male clientele have some sort of ’tache or beard, compared to around one in ten just five years ago. Designer stubble started sneaking in, and the odd ’tache. The demand for the more rough-and-rugged look started pushing ahead of the usually popular twink or surfer look.

    Your correspondent with Graham Martin.

It could be that the gay scene is evolving. When I first came out in the late 70s, I was told at the tender age of 16 to have fun as “you’re washed up by 25”. Nasty lies fed to me by the chicken-hawks, as they were called back then.

At one point during the groundbreaking (and sure to win every award going) “It’s a Sin”, written by Russell T Davies, two of the characters are chatting. Curtis tells Richie he slept with a man who was 36; both express their disgust. Arguably the gay scene has always been youth obsessed, with a tendency towards the Dorian Gray complex.

Still, change certainly has come upon us. The Daddies, Silver Fox and The Bear, Wolf and Well-Over-40 seem to be the new in. One Silver-Haired Daddy who is in his sixties, wearing a ’tache and beard, says he is inundated with young men wanting to meet, as well as guys his own age. All seem to love the beard.

Michael Edde is a popular barber in London’s Earl’s Court with a large gay clientele. He has seen a huge increase in beards and ’taches.

    Legendary barber Michael Deeds.

“The best way to get your beard looking good is to grow it for ten to fifteen days and have it professionally shaped”, says Michael. “Obviously during lockdown this is impossible. My recommendation is to use conditioner or beard oil, and you might try using Buddha clippers. Start with the highest gauge and work down till you get the shape you’re happy with. Many of my male clients love a beard.”

Being on my own during lockdown, I gave up shaving for a day or two and decided I quite liked the look. The second time around I had better luck, and my ’tache seemed to come through strongly this time. I had a little help from Watermans’ “GROWME” shampoo.

    https://watermanshair.com

By week four, I had a beard and a ’tache for the first time in my 59 years.

Reactions were, erm, varied. Some people burst out laughing. Two girlfriends thought I looked like a Joe Swash tribute act. But for the most part, it went down very well. Graham Martin thought it was an attribute. My ex loved it, and even my sister thought it was cool. One thing that did stand out is the fact I am ginger, and much as I have hidden this since I was 18 by dyeing my hair blond, there was no way of hiding it with the beard. Maybe in my sixth decade, embracing my red-headed Scots heritage might not be a bad thing. It has certainly been fun trying it, and it may be here to stay.

Certainly now, I can say with conviction, “Who’s your Daddy?”
